RISK TRAINING

S.C.A.R.E.D – Training

What is S.C.A.R.E.D Training? S.C.A.R.E.D is what we use to risk assess all our oversea and UK based expeditions and events. Any activity, which involves working in remote and hostile environments is thoroughly planned and put through the S.C.A.R.E.D checklist. The S.C.A.R.E.D model then becomes our go to method of dynamic risk assessing and implementing any emergency action plans.

Who is S.C.A.R.E.D Training Suitable for?

We run two courses.

1) An Introduction to S.C.A.R.E.D with First Aid.

This is a 4 day course that is designed for people who are thinking of setting up and leading their own expeditions overseas, or organising adventure holidays, extreme endurance events or CPD for any new or old expedition leads or medics.

There is so much to know when it comes to the aforementioned, which could never be covered to the required level within 4 days. But what we do offer is a thorough introduction to risk management and risk assessing when working in remote areas. Along with a fully certificated and HSE complaint remote first aid course and navigation qualifications. The training is predominately outdoors and interactive, with some classroom work to consolidate the learning. There are two sayings “You don’t know what you don’t know” and “You know what you don’t know” We will take you from the first to the second!

This course is priced at £300 pp to make it affordable for people setting out in the industry.

2) S.C.A.R.E.D Training

This is a 7 day course that covers all that is on the introduction course, but in far more depth. There is far more emphasis on practice and scenarios. This is ideal for bespoke private courses for companies who run expeditions or media and research groups taking on an adventure in a remote area. This input can be tailored to your specific requirements and the area you are working in. Contact us to discuss options.

S.C.A.R.E.D The Meaning

We will train you to use this simple formula to ensure you cover or have considered all major eventualities before deploying or going live on an event.

Situational Awareness

Situational Awareness is exactly that. We will make sure you understand and know the importance of understanding where you are going. What is the political status, weather, wildlife, local cultures, transport infrastructure and terrain. Have you got the appropriate documentation, map, currency and anything else? Our training shows the best ways to get this information, how to understand it and having robust procedures to ensure nothing is missed and you are equipped to deal with emergencies.

Communication

Ensuring that you have a fit for purpose communication strategy. We will look at all options available and how best to source them, working within budgets and how to use them. It is important to Know the limitations of each item, what can go wrong and having a number of back up plans.

Accidents and Injuries

If things do go wrong, It is your capability and actions in this section that you are most likely to have to justify in a court of law, to an insurance company and where you can suffer most organisational damage.

To protect you and your organisation. The training covers a process of, looking at where you are going, what you are doing and who you are taking. We use this information to come up with most likely injuries and accidents that a party are most likely to come across and plan and prepare for these. If we are going into high altitude we need to prepare for altitude sickness. If we are going into areas of extreme heat or cold we need to prepare for these.

This is the section of the S.C.A.R.E.D Training that takes up the majority of the time. We will look at our kit, what we can carry, how to use the items and spend each day going through remote first aid skills and scenario based incident management. This is your remote first aid training, where it will be a mixture of being taught and learning through pressure.

Response

Before you deploy or start an event, you need to know what a response to an incident looks like. Will it be professional, will you have to pay for the service and most important. What timescales are we looking at? This information is Vital in the planning and will dictate what extra kit your medic will have to carry.

Evacuation

Carrying on from the response, What are your evacuation options and how will these work practically. It is important to be honest with your team about Response times and evacuation strategies.

Decision Making

This is the biggest skill an outdoor instructor, expedition lead or race director can have. You live and die by your decision making. In the planning stages, you identify the risks and decide on what measures are put in place. Some of these will be made for financial reasons and some will be practical. Then once you are in the midst of leading your group, your decisions are the be all and end all. We aim to improve your skills in decision making by working through S.C.A.R.E.D
