Toughest Mountain Challenges
MUUK ADVENTUES 8 TOUGHEST MOUNTAIN CHALLENGES

Looking for a serious mountain challenge? From the mountains of Wales to the High Atlas of Morocco and the Himalayas, these are some of the toughest hiking challenges you can take on with MUUK Adventures. There are other tougher Mountain Challenges, but these are the top 8 Toughest Mountain Challenges that MUUK Adventures offer
We’ve rated each challenge out of 10 for overall difficulty.
Important: Our scores assume you are already a good hill or mountain walker with a good level of fitness. Mountain conditions matter too. Poor weather, darkness, heat, cold or difficult ground can quickly turn a 6/10 day into a 10/10 challenge.
1. Welsh 3000s Under 24 Hours – 9/10
Distance: Approx. 45–50km
Ascent: Approx. 4,000m+
Trail: Mountain paths, rocky ground, steep and exposed terrain
The Welsh 3000s is a monster. The challenge involves reaching all 15 Welsh summits above 3,000ft within 24 hours.
Long distances, relentless ascent, exposed sections and the clock make this one of our hardest UK mountain challenges. You need excellent mountain fitness and the ability to keep moving when tired.
MUUK Difficulty: 9/10
2. Everest Base Camp – 8.5/10
Distance: Approx. 120–130km return
Highest point: Kala Patthar, 5,545m (depending on itinerary)
Trail: Mountain trekking paths and high-altitude terrain
Everest Base Camp is different from a one-day endurance challenge. The difficulty comes from consecutive trekking days and, above all, altitude.
You don’t need to be a technical mountaineer, but you do need endurance, determination and respect for the effects of increasing altitude.
MUUK Difficulty: 8.5/10
3. Mount Toubkal – 8/10
Summit: 4,167m
Typical summit section: Approx. 11km
Trail: Mountain paths and goat tracks; winter conditions can add snow
North Africa’s highest mountain delivers a fantastic introduction to hiking above 4,000m. The summit itself isn’t technically difficult in normal conditions, but the steep ground on Ice is not to be underestimated, The quick rise in altitude and the long summit day make Toubkal a serious challenge.
MUUK Difficulty: 8/10
4. National Three Peaks Under 24 Hours – 7.9/10
Distance: Approx. 37km walking
Ascent: Approx. 3,064m
Trail: Mixed UK mountain terrain
Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa in under 24 hours. Add roughly 460 miles of road travel and very little recovery time, and you have a major endurance challenge. To get the challenge completed in under 24hrs takes good personal admin, good driving conditions and a bit of luck. With a success rate of around 40%, many fail on planning and logistics.
MUUK Difficulty: 7.9/10
5. Welsh Three Peaks Under 20 Hours – 7/10
Distance: Approx. 27km
Ascent: Approx. 2,334m
Trail: Mountain paths and rough terrain
Yr Wyddfa, Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan make a brilliant Welsh endurance challenge. The walking is only part of it: fatigue, travel and repeatedly getting back out of the vehicle test your mental strength too. This is a great challenge, completed North to South works well to get the two difficult ones done first.
MUUK Difficulty: 7/10

6. Brecon Beacons 10 Peaks – Two Days – 7/10
A two-day journey across some of the best mountain terrain in Bannau Brycheiniog. Expect substantial ascent, long days and tired legs on day two. It’s a great step up for experienced walkers wanting a multi-day mountain challenge without heading overseas.
We have done this in horrendous conditions and I’d score that as a 8.9. This can also be made far more difficult by doing it in under 24hrs.
MUUK Difficulty: 7/10
7. Fan Dance – No Time Limit – 6/10
Distance: Approx. 22km
Ascent: Approx. 1,700m
Trail: Steep mountain paths and rough upland terrain
Following the famous Fan Dance route across Pen y Fan, this is a physically demanding day even without racing the clock. The route involves around 22km and more than 1,700m of ascent. This is a great challenge, following in the foot of the UK Special Forces. If you want to turn it into a 8/10 aim for the SF time of under 4hrs 10mins or make it load bearing.
MUUK Difficulty: 6/10
8. Brecon Beacons Horseshoe – 5.9/10
Distance: Approx. 16km / 10 miles
Trail: Circular mountain route, steep climbs, ridges and uneven paths
Highest point: Pen y Fan, 886m
Don’t let the lowest score fool you. The classic Horseshoe is still a proper mountain day with steep climbing to get up on the ridges and then the exposed upland terrain. The National Trust describes the route as challenging and warns walkers to prepare for unpredictable mountain weather and we second that.
The weather and visibility can make it difficult but if the sun is shinning the views are world class.
MUUK Difficulty: 5.9/10
