The Blue Monster Swim – Abereiddy 2021

In 2019, August some time I believe, We were due to run the Blue Monster Swim out of Abereiddy. Two days before, the weather forecast did not look good. We made an early call to postpone. The day came and we were proved right, there is no way a swim could have been held. Never mind we said, we’ll hold it in 2020!!!

So after the busiest summer the area and that we have ever seen, I was still doubtful that this swim could go ahead in 2021. But I am delighted to say that we got it done. Yes we had last minute issues, like avoiding the seals and there was a fair bit of chop! in the bay. But we explained all of this and I think from the reaction that the vast majority of competitors were just glad to be back amongst friends standing on a starting line, with butterflies in the belly.

The swim it’s self was a challenge, sighting is always difficult on the Blue Monster but add the swell and its a proper challenge, The kayakers worked extra hard keeping everyone on course. But I do believe part of the fun is finding your own way (not all would agree).

All we can say is fair play to all who took it on and especially those that completed it. At the top end of the field there were some outstanding efforts with Ffion Davies of Port Talbot being the overall winner and Alex King of a town called Eckington being the first male home.

Whilst in the smaller swim the first person home was also a lady, Lila Evans and Tom Craig being the first male home and only being a mare 43 years the senior to first place Lila.

But once again a big thanks to all who took part and for your patience in the long waiting game.

And a massive thanks to the safety crew, who did a great job in tough conditions
