The Tour de Shane – Pembrokeshire – 22nd April 2023.

Read About the 2022 Event Here!

The Tour de Shane is based around Britain’s smallest City. St Davids, there are two routes, a 70 and 50 miler. The ride truly is a sportive, done in great spirit with great pit stops,

But and a big but! The course is a hilly one, it will challenge the most seasoned of riders, but if you are prepared to make a day of it, it is suitable for all.

We haven’t made it hilly on purpose, just if you want to see Pembrokeshires best spots, you have to go up and down a few times! and it’s fair to say that both our routes do that! as they take in some of the most iconic coastal locations the county has to offer.

You will pass-through picture-perfect fishing villages as you meander around the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. This is a great day out and ideal way to explore the North and Mid Pembrokeshire region.

The TDS is a not-for-profit event, with all profits going to Velindre Cancer Centre, which Shane is a patron of and uses this event as part of his fundraising efforts for this great cause.

Shane Williams MBE

We are delighted to work with Shane on the Tour de Shane cycle Sportive. Following a long and glittering professional rugby career Shane has certainly not chosen the easy path!

He has successfully competed in Ironman Wales three times and has broken the magical 12hrs mark by over 40 minutes. 2021 also saw him entering the Guinness World Records for his cycling feat of visiting all Welsh Castles in the fastest time on two wheels!

Many of these challenges have been in support of the charities that Shane champions, one of which is The Velindre Cancer Centre. TDS gives Shane the opportunity to combine his passion with raising funds and awareness for this great charity.

The Amman Adventure

The Amman Adventure – 100 Miler

We are currently looking for the most appropriate date in 2023 to hold this event.

Together with Shane Williams, we are delighted to bring back the Amman Adventure. We have used the past two years to discover new routes, and in doing so we believe we have found a classic in this 100 miler.

The Amman Adventure 100 mile route takes in some of the most spectacular countryside Wales has to offer. This route has been designed to take you away from the built up areas and into the Wilderness of the Brecon Beacons and Mid Wales.

The route does have 3 or 4! great climbs with two of these (The Devils Stair Case and Black Mountain) being enough to challenge any cyclist. This is a true cycling Sportive with a route that takes you off the beaten path, in the pursuit of great views and cycling challenges that you would not normally face. To make the ride an event and social occasion we will have 3 aid station along the way. One of these will have hot food for a much needed carb intake!

All of this added to the fact that you will be cycling 100 miles, makes this an epic cycling challenge and great day out with like minded people.

This ride really is something special and with the devils stair case, one hell of a challenge!

The 100 Mile Ride

Places of Note

The Ride starts in the heart of the Amman Valley, at Glanaman RFC. The first 10 miles will be gentle as you pass through the Valley towns and villages before you hit the Brecon Beacons and the first proper climb of the day.

Here you will head up the Crai Mountain Road and through the spectacular mountain pass, once you peak this climb on about 20 miles, The next 20 miles will take you to The historic drovers town of Llandovery and will be pretty much all down hill.

At Llandovery you will be able to make use of one of the pit stops. Once you leave the town, heading North into the heart of Mid Wales the going will be steady until you reach 57.5 mile mark. This spot will be the foot of the infamous devils stair case. I haven’t got the words to give this justice, but at the top you will feel a certain sense of achievement. Your reward for conquering the stair case, will be a magnificent ride along the Llyn Brianne. In fact the whole section through this hidden part of Mid Wales will help lift the morale and keep the peddles turning.

Once you pass the lake, you will make your way back to Llandovery and utilise the aid station again for a much needed Carb intake, Before you start heading back to the Amman Valley. This return section will see you take on the last big challenge of the day, The Black Mountain – Have you got what it takes to climb the Black Mountain with 87 Miles in the legs!!! if you have you will be rewarded with a 7 mile down hill stretch to the finish line. And much needed refreshments, to contemplate a day you won’t forget.

There will also be food and refreshments available at the start and finish line.

The Route – Amman Adventure 100 Miles

Amman Adventure – 50 Miler

  • Timed event and times published on website – Although it is  sportive not a race
  • Aid station stocked with fluid and food (exact locations to be sent to riders)
  • Event T-shirt

The Amman Adventure 50 mile route takes in some of the most spectacular countryside the South Wales Valleys have to offer. With great roads that have ideal surfaces for cycling and although the route does have 2 great peaks the overall elevation for the course is reasonable, meaning there are also some great flat or down hill sections that really allow you to stretch the legs and enjoy the ride. As a sportive we feel the ride has the lot, from challenging climbs to rolling roads and great views at an achievable distance.

Places of Note

The Ride starts in the heart of the Amman Valley, at Glanaman RFC. The first 10 miles will be gentle as you pass through the Valley towns and villages before you hit the Brecon Beacons and the first proper climb of the day.

Here you will head up the Crai Mountain Road and through the spectacular mountain pass, once you peak this climb on about 20 miles, there’s a 6 mile downhill to enjoy. As you hit Sennybridge on about 26 miles there will be an aid station waiting for you.

From here you head to Trecastle and make your way over the splendid mountain road void of much traffic or human life! this road will take you to the foot of the Black Mountain. The Black Mountain will give you a great climbing challenge and once at the top you will be rewarded with a sense of achievement, great views and a 7 mile downhill stretch to the finish line, where much need refreshments will be waiting for you.

Booking Conditions

Organising events relies on pre-bookings, to establish what our outlays will be and how much of everything we have to order. To make sure that we are not left at a loss by ordering unnecessary items the following policy is in place.

  • You can obtain a refund of 80% up until a month before the event
  • No refunds will be issued after 1 month before the start of the event
  • You can transfer your place to another rider up until 2 weeks before the start of the event.
  • You can defer your place to the following years event up until 2 weeks before the start of the event. (only one deferral is allowed)
  • You can transfer your entry to another TDS distance, up until 2 weeks before the event (assuming there is space on the other event)
  • In the interest of safety or last minute road works we may have to alter the route at short notice.

Our events are held in the outdoors in wonderful places and that is what makes them challenging and spectacular. Unfortunately from time to time extreme weather conditions can cause serious disruption to the areas of the event or make the running of the event unsafe or irresponsible. On such occasions we may have to postpone the event. If this is done we will look for the nearest possible date to reschedule the event. If a rescheduled date proves to be unsuccessful or one can not be found entries will be deferred to the following years event.

What this means is

If an event is cancelled due to adverse weather, or an unforeseen incident, emergency or such matter that is totally out of our control; Your options are.

  • 50% refund will be given
  • You will be deferred to the new date
  • If the New date does not suit you, you will be transferred to the following years event.
  • Throughout this process you will have the opportunity to transfer your place to another person or swap to another of our events of the same value.

We hope you appreciate the reasons behind such a policy and understand the work and financial commitment that goes into an event in the lead up, such as staff hours, merchandise buying and marketing. And having to cancel or having a large number of request for refunds can make future events unsustainable. We also very much appreciate the time and financial commitment you have put into training and preparing for an event and the frustration you have at it being postponed. That is why we try to be as fair as possible in dealing with these matters.

Our insurance does not cover cancellations, However I know there are companies that cover individual competitors for entry fees on cancelled events. If you do a large amount of events and ones of high value this may be something to look into.

Tour de Shane 70 2019
My second time doing this ride and so good I travel 130 miles to take part!
The atmosphere and camaraderie from both organisers and participants are second to none. Great challenging route with stunning views which is well signed, good feed stations and amazing encouragement through the route. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it – even with all the climbs!

April 1, 2019

Thank you very much, Glad you enjoyed it

October 8, 2022

Signed up to the TDS in 2019 as a Carten training ride.

Carten this is not, I’ve now done the Carten a few times and this is way more difficult!!

It is, however, a very well organised and well run event, with lots of attentive Marshalls and well timed feed stops, plenty of info before hand and from that side of things I absolutely cannot fault the organisers!

I would definitely recommend this as an event to do if you have done hill training!

October 9, 2022
