For a lot of industries, events and corporations first aid can be seen as “something that has to be done”, as a “cost that’s not welcome” and a “task to be handed over to a sub contractor”.
There is nothing wrong with this approach, If you are comfortable with that. However with so many new adventure companies and events setting up along with the fact that any incident will be under far more scrutiny with a call of redress from the public and authorities. Mean that it is wise to take your first aid responsibilities seriously and ensure you are beyond reproach.
We can do as much or as little as you want. It is worth bearing in mind that your first aid reponsibilities as an employer or orgainiser to public events go far beyond dealing with a casualty. As such we can advise and assist on the following.
We can offer specialist assistance and advice to the following and more.
All our First aid consulting technical advisor work is carried out by our Operations Director Fintan Godkin. What Fintan has to say about his First Aid Experience.
“I did my first FA course whilst in prmiary school as a member of the St Davids Red Cross and since then I think pretty much every job I have had has involved first aid in some way. These have included, Pool and Beach Lifeguard, Outdoor Activity Instructor, Restidential Child Care Homes, Police Service, Extreme Events orgainiser and First Aid Trainer. During my time I have been first person on the scene to numerous (too many to remember) incidents and have seen and dealt with all types of scenario’s such as, explosions, gunshots, drownings, incidents of mass casualties, trauma in remote and hostile environments, substance misuse, self harm and anything inbetween”.
“Although I consider myself to be a proven, confident and proficient first aider my real skill is planning, orgainising and risk assessing. This comes from the experience gained in 25 years of high risk operational and event planning. The work I have been involved in has been varied. I have worked for the emergency services as an operation lead, I have worked in a consultancy and training capacity for private companies and I have overseen and lead on every first aid and safety aspect of the MUUK-Adventure business. I have learnt a lot and keep learning.
But the biggest lessons have come from the near misses and occasions when things have gone wrong. One of my biggest assessts as a consultant or advisor is, I have seen things from both sides. I have been part of joint police and health and safety executives investigations into orgainisers and businesses over injuries and deaths and I have been subject of HSE and insurance company investigation and claims following incidents where I have been in charge. Which I managed to successfully defend with minimal work, due to the pre event planning and documentation. If you work in extreme sports industry or events with mass participation / Attendence, at some point you will have an incident. Make sure you are in a good place to deal with it and address the fallout. It’s hard to sum up 25 years but heres a snap shot.
To back up the experience Fintan hold a number of formal qualifications such as FREC Level 3 First Aid, Level 3 In Adult Teaching, First Aid Instructor, Post Graduate Diploma – Life Science, British Triathlon Event Planning, Mountain Leader, Police National Hostage and Crises Negoiator.
