The Atlas Mountains in Morocco are a magical place. They are home to Mount Toubkal (North Africa’s highest Peak), Many valley’s and hundreds of miles of unspoilt and barely travelled paths. For our adventures we base ourselves in the Imlil Valley in the High Atlas Mountains, amongst the Berber people. A region that lays 1700m above sea level. Where you can hike amongst the snow capped mountains in the morning and then on 22 degree olive farm trails in the afternoon.
During our trip we stay in traditional Berber accommodation and are well fed on local cuisine. Which can cater for all dietary requirements. We are supported by professional and registered local guides who have been born and bred in the Atlas Mountains. Our Toubkal adventures are a real personal challenge in breathtaking scenery. But what all our guests take away as the highlight of the trip, is the overwhelming cultural experience and the welcome from the Berber people. It can be very hiumbling.
This trip gives you the unique opportunity, To hike North Africa’s highest peak. The added beauty of this trek is that it can be done in a long weekend and only a 3hr 40min flight from the UK.
Mount Toubkal is situated in the High Atlas Mountains an area that is steeped in tradition of the Berber people and surrounded by outstanding natural beauty. The hike will see us walk through these villages as we make our way to the summit. This is a tough but achievable challenge that will see you take on the added challenge of altitude on the way to the 4167m peak.
Typically we will take on the the mountain over two days. The first will see us hike to base Camp. A fabulous old fort in the middle of nowhere. It is such a welcoming sight as you end day one. The Fort sits just over 3000m so expect a restless night in the dorms as you come to terms with the altitiude. The second day will start early (0400hrs) as we hike into the morning light to reach the summit for day break. Once summitted, we make our way back down to the Imlil Valley.
The Mountain can be hiked with no technical ability as we follow paths and goat tracks to the summit. However the winter months may see the peak and path layered with snow, which add to the challenge. However it is fair to say that a good level of hiking fitness is needed.
The main issue we will face is Altitude, we will be operating in an area of reduced oxygen and this can effect people in different ways, especially if not managed. We will look after you and manage the rise in altitude the best we can to give you the best opportunity to succeed. (We will ascend slowly)
In summary you will need good determination, a good level of hiking fitness and a sense of adventure. You will need to be comfortable sleeping in a basic dorm (Could be Crowded) on Summit night.
