Sahara Adventure

Muuk Adventures: 8-Day High Atlas to Sahara Adventure

There are journeys—and then there are journeys that stay with you forever. Our recent 8-day Muuk Adventures Sahara Adventure expedition across Morocco belongs firmly in the second category. What began as a simple plan to explore new terrain and identify a route for a race we had in mind. Quickly became an experience rich with scenery, discovery, challenge, and cultural connection. With a team of five—three of whom were our incredible local partners from MTB Morocco—we set out to travel from the towering heights of the High Atlas Mountains to the rolling golden dunes of the Sahara Desert. What unfolded was a true adventure in every sense of the word.

A Unique Team and a Shared Spirit of Adventure

Our group was small but full of banter. Alongside the two riders from Muuk Adventures, our three Moroccan partners brought deep knowledge of the terrain, warm hospitality, and the kind of calm confidence that can only come from living and riding in these landscapes every day.

This mixture made the journey more than an adventure—it became a cultural exchange, a bonding experience, and a reminder of how shared challenges bring people together. Leaving me with the confirmation that, we are all the same, if our thirst for adventure is the same!

Travelling by 4×4 and MTB Through Wild Morocco

Our daily rhythm blended the rugged reliability of 4×4 travel with the raw, freedom of mountain biking. It was the perfect combination—using the vehicles to cross long, remote stretches or rough approaches, then jumping onto the bikes to feel the terrain under our wheels and experience each environment up close.

Although I wouldn’t say the 4×4 was all plane sailing! Jeff was squashed in the back and I commanded the front seat, one benefit of being bigger. And some of the mountain tracks were tight! It definitely felt safer to be on the bike and not the truck.

However from the narrow switchbacks carved into the mountainsides to wide open desert tracks stretching toward the horizon, every day brought a new challenge and a new view. The diversity in landscapes meant that no two hours—let alone two days—were ever the same.

Crossing the High Atlas Mountain Passes

We began high in the Atlas Mountains, where jagged peaks cut sharp lines across the skyline. Riding the narrow passes felt like moving along the roof of Morocco. The air was thinner, the trails steeper, and the scenery absolutely unforgettable.

Every climb rewarded us with sweeping views over ancient villages and deep valleys carved by centuries of wind and water a real geological masterpiece. At one point I was peddling hard up a fairly steep climb and I could really feel it, only to realise we were at 2600m For us sea level dwellers this is a big ask! It actually made me feel a lot better and excused my lack of fitness, by blaming it on the altitude!

Riding Into the Valley of the Kasbahs

From the rugged mountains, we descended into the magical Valley of the Kasbahs—a region known for historic mud-brick fortresses, palm-lined riverbeds, and rich cultural heritage.

Cycling past towering kasbahs felt like riding through a living museum. Each structure told a story, and every turn opened up another picture-perfect scene.

Through Gorges, Palm Oases, and Wide Mountain Plateaus

The terrain changed constantly as we pushed deeper into the heart of Morocco. One moment we were navigating tight gorges with red rock walls rising above us; the next, we were cruising through quiet palm tree oasis alive with birds and flowing water.

The high mountain plateaus became some of our favourite sections. These vast open spaces carried a peaceful silence that you could feel in your chest. They were also where we took a couple of well earned breaks, to rehydrate, The open spaces and baking sun were draining. These stops also allowed us to marvel in the views. The silence was amazing.

Sharing Tea With Nomads in Remote Morocco

One of the most unforgettable parts of our journey was meeting local nomadic families. In some of the most isolated stretches, we were welcomed into little caves and served traditional Moroccan mint tea.

These moments were humbling reminders of the generosity, resilience, and warmth of the people who call these landscapes home. Sitting side-by-side on woven rugs, sharing stories with gestures and smiles, was a highlight none of us will ever forget. Although I did feel bad, when told the lady making our tea had 11 children, the oldest of which was 76. She was unsure of her age!

Reaching the Sahara Desert: A Powerful Finale

As the mountains faded behind us, the earth gradually softened and shifted. Soon, the towering dunes of the Sahara Desert rose on the horizon like golden waves.

Reaching the Sahara felt like arriving at another world. Riding the edges of the dunes, exploring the soft sand, and watching the sun drop behind the horizon brought the entire adventure full circle.

It was the perfect finale to an extraordinary 8-day expedition. Or so we thought! The following day, we had to hike and bike out of the desert after a morning camel ride, which saw us see the sunrise across the desert.

But reaching the desert was a massive thing for me, another mythical place from my childhood, from books, old films and stories, it was a real bucket list destination. I will say, navigation is difficult and the sense of vulnerability is real.

A Journey of Connection, Culture, and Adventure

Our Muuk Adventures 8-day Morocco expedition delivered everything we hoped for—and so much more. From mountain passes to desert dunes, from rugged trails to tea with nomads, every moment reminded us of the beauty of Morocco and the power of shared adventure.

Travelling with our partners from MTB Morocco deepened the experience, bridging cultures and creating friendships we will carry long after the dust has settled. The banter, the laughing at silly things the places they took us off the beaten tracks. To top it all off as we left the flat lands of the Sahara desert we were straight into Snow!

This was more than a trip—it was a story we’ll be telling for years.

The Sahara Adventure

The purpose behind our Sahara adventure was to plan with MTB Morocco a 7 day staged footrace from the High Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert, using there vast local knowledge to pick the best routes that flow and offer world class views and terrain. I am pretty sure we found this and in the process have also discovered a great biking tour! Both will be out in 2026.
