Tour de Shane – Pembrokeshire Sportive 2019 Results

The Pembrokeshire Sportive – 24th April 2021

The 2020 TDS, Pembrokeshire Sportive like so many other events could not be staged due to the well documented Covid-19 Pandemic. However we can not let these things beat us and therefore we are glad to announce that there are plans to run the event in April 2021.

Things will have to be changed and we will have to adapt. But I’m sure for many of you, you will be excited to get back out onto an event and ride on an organised Sportive again.

At this stage we will not be publishing the routes or logistics. We will be saving these for nearer the time, when we known how the world, National and local restrictions will look. But in the meantime we will be working hard over the winter to ensure the event can go ahead.

No further bookings will be taken for the event with the priority being to ensure those already booked get to ride. Details will be emailed to those who are already signed up in due course. Thank you.

We are delighted to work with Shane on the Tour de Shane cycle Sportive. Following a long and glittering professional rugby career where he gained a number of honours.

Winning 2 Grand Slams, awarded IRB World Player of the Year in 2008 and becoming Wales all time top try scorer are just a few of his many accolades.

These achievements have firmly cemented his reputation as one of the greatest to have ever played the game. A fact, which has been acknowledged by his inducement into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

Since retirement Shane has certainly not chosen the easy path! He has successfully competed in Ironman Wales three times and in 2016 broke the magical 12hrs mark by over 30 minutes for the first time. Then very recently in 2018 set his own PB at an extremely impressive 11:19:03hrs.

As well as competing in IM and triathlons, Shane has undertaken numerous sportives, cycling challenges and hikes across Wales, Europe and further afield.

Many of these challenges have been in support of the charities that Shane champions, one of which is The Velindre Cancer Centre. Therefore the TDS gives Shane the opportunity to combine his passion with raising funds and awareness for this great charity, whilst providing the cycling community with quality events that take in two spectacular areas of Wales’s. Both of which pass through national parks and give the riders a couple of memorable scenic and challenging rides.

Tour de Shane – Amman Adventure

The 80 Miler

2018 – ResultsCLICK HERE

2019 – unfortunately there will be no Amman Adventure this year due to Shane’s commitments at the Rugby World Cup in Japan

Next Event – We are waiting to see how restrictions unfold before a new date.

Location – Amman Utd Rugby Club, Glanaman, Ammanford, SA18 1DQ

Distance – 80.5 miles

Elevation gain – 5579ft

Logistics – Full details of the logistics, Aid stations, Registration, car parking and so on will appear here soon.

The Amman Adventure 80 mile route takes in some of the most spectacular countryside the South Wales Valleys have to offer. With great roads that have ideal surfaces for cycling and although the route does have 3 or 4! respectable peaks the overall elevation for the course is reasonable, meaning there are also some great flat or down hill sections that really allow you to stretch the legs and enjoy the ride. As a sportive we feel the ride has the lot, from challenging climbs to rolling roads and great views.

The biggest and most brutal climb of the day comes after only 3 miles and will see you make a 4 mile climb over the Black Mountains, the first half of this climb is steady with the last two miles being an out of the saddle type push! a couple of things will keep you going through this hard slog, 1) the view at the top 2) the knowledge that the next 15 miles will be either down hill or flat! From here the route will take you down a spectacular and technical decent and once in the valley you will make your way to Llandovery, this section has a good few miles of flat, straight open roads, which will allow you to stretch your legs, before you reach the A40 and head into Brecon via Sennybridge, where you will cycle through the centre of the iconic market town.

From here you will start to make your way back to the Amman, via a spectacular mountain pass and onto the Crai mountain road, both of which have been real hits with previous cyclists of the Amman Adventure. As you cut through the Brecon Beacon National Park not surprisingly you will face one final climb of the day before passing by the national show caves of Wales and then through the valley towns and villages of Ystradgynlais and Cwmllynfell on your way back at Glanaman for much deserved refreshments.

What you get

  • The Route will be fully marked and marshalled at appropriate points
  • Timed event and times published on website – Although it is  sportive not a race
  • 2 x Aid stations stocked with fluid and food (exact locations to be sent to riders)

Entry fee £35

There will also be food and refreshments available at the start and finish line.

The Route

Amman Adventure – 50 Miler

Location – Amman Utd Rugby Club, Glanaman, Ammanford, SA18 1DQ

Distance – 50 miles

Elevation gain – 4087ft

The Amman Adventure 50 mile route takes in some of the most spectacular countryside the South Wales Valleys have to offer. With great roads that have ideal surfaces for cycling and although the route does have 3 respectable peaks the overall elevation for the course is reasonable, meaning there are also some great flat or down hill sections that really allow you to stretch the legs and enjoy the ride. As a sportive we feel the ride has the lot, from challenging climbs to rolling roads and great views at an achievable distance.

The biggest and most brutal climb of the day comes after only 3 miles and will see you make a 4 mile climb over the Black Mountains, two things will keep you going through this hard slog, 1) the view at the top 2) the knowledge that the next 6 miles will be down hill! From here the 50 mile route has what we consider to be a treat a B road that takes you through the heart of the Brecon Beacons, past the Usk Reservoir, where you will join the A40 at Trecastle, this road really is a step back in time and although there are two cattle grid crossings, a steady climb to get to the ridge, once on the ridge it is spectacularly wild but with straight flat roads, which will allow you to enjoy the scenery. Once on the A40 you will make your way to Sennybridge, at the village renowned for its Military connections you will start to make your way back to the Amman through the Brecon Beacon National Park passing by the national show caves of Wales and through the valley towns and villages of Ystradgynlais and Cwmllynfell before arriving back at Glanaman for well earned refreshments.

This is a great route for those seeking a challenge but not quite sure about the 80 miler

Refunds / Deferrals / Transfers Policy

Organising events relies on pre bookings, to establish what our outlays will be and how much of everything there is to order. Therefore, so that we are not left at a loss by ordering unnecessary items the following policy is in place.

• You can obtain a refund of 80% up until a month before the event
• No refunds will be issued after 1 month before the start of the event
• You can transfer your place to another runner up until 48hrs before the start of the event.
• You can defer your place to the following years event up until 2 weeks before the start of the event.
• You can transfer your entry to another event of the same value, up until 2 weeks before the event (assuming there is space on the other event)

Our events are held in the outdoors in wonderful places and that is what makes them challenging and spectacular. Unfortunately, from time to time extreme weather conditions can cause serious disruption to the areas of the event or make the running of the event unsafe or irresponsible. On such occasions we may have to postpone the event.

If this is done, we will look for the nearest possible date to reschedule the event. If a rescheduled date proves to be unsuccessful or one cannot be found entries will be deferred to the following years event.

What this means is

If an event is cancelled due to adverse weather, or an unforeseen incident, emergency or such matter that is totally out of our control;

• No refunds will be given
• You will be deferred to the new date
• If the New date does not suit you, you will be transferred to the following years event.
• Throughout this process you will have the opportunity to transfer your place to another person or swap to another of our events of the same value.

We hope you appreciate the reasons behind such a policy and understand the work and financial commitment that goes into an event in the lead up, such as staff hours, merchandise buying and marketing. And having to cancel or having a large number of requests for refunds can make future events unsustainable.

We also very much appreciate the time and financial commitment you have put into training and preparing for an event and the frustration you have at it being postponed. That is why we try to be as fair as possible in dealing with these matters.

Our insurance does not cover cancelations; However, I know there are companies that cover individual competitors for entry fees on cancelled events. If you do many events and ones of high value this may be something to look into.

We would also like to thank our many customers of the years for their support 99.99% of which are very understanding and are true event athletes when nature strikes.

Fantastic ride and yet another great ManUpUk event. Lucky with the weather but a great mix of flat and hills. Never ever get tired of the view from the Havens – definitely helped me get up Newgale hill and home!! Can’t wait for next year!!

Tour de Shane 70 2019
My second time doing this ride and so good I travel 130 miles to take part!
The atmosphere and camaraderie from both organisers and participants are second to none. Great challenging route with stunning views which is well signed, good feed stations and amazing encouragement through the route. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it – even with all the climbs!
