Tour de Shane – Pembrokeshire Sportive 2019 Results

Shane Williams MBE

We are delighted to be working with Shane once again on the Tour de Shane cycle Sportive. Following a long and glittering professional rugby career where he gained a number of honours. Winning 2 Grand Slams, awarded IRB World Player of the Year in 2008 and becoming Wales all time top try scorer are just a few of his many accolades. These achievements have firmly cemented his reputation as one of the greatest to have ever played the game a fact, which has been acknowledged by his inducement into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

Since retirement Shane has certainly not chosen the easy path! He has successfully competed in Ironman Wales three times and in 2016 broke the magical 12hrs mark by over 30 minutes for the first time. Then very recently in 2018 set his own PB at an extremely impressive 11:19:03hrs. As well as competing in IM and triathlons Shane has undertaken numerous sportives, cycling challenges and hikes across Wales, Europe and further afield.

Many of these challenges have been in support of the charities that Shane champions, one of which is The Velindre Cancer Centre. Therefore the TDS gives Shane the opportunity to combine his passion with raising funds and awareness for this great charity, whilst providing the cycling community with two quality events that take in two spectacular areas of Wales’s. Both of which pass through national parks and give the riders a couple of memorable scenic and challenging rides. Our aim with Shane is to make the two Tour de Shane Cycle sportive a memorable and must do cycle challenge

The Pembrokeshire Sportive takes in some of the most beautiful little villages and roads that Pembrokeshire has to offer. The county that boasts the fact that it’s the only Coastal National Park in the UK and many of the areas iconic coastal sites will be visited and passed as you take on the TDS.

There are 2 distances of 50 miles and 70 miles making this ideal for an early season ride, whether your goal for the year is IronMan, a 100 mile sportive or you see the TDS as one-off personal challenge and a chance to support Shane in his role as an ambassador for this great charity. The 2020 event will be on closed roads. This is being done to allow us to safely increase the numbers and to allow the ride to raise a significant amount of money for Velindre Cancer Centre.

2019 – unfortunately there will be no Amman Adventure this year due to Shane’s commitments at the Rugby World Cup in Japan

2020 – details to follow

The event is based at Shane’s first and “probably” last club Amman Utd RFC, which is an ideal starting location to explore the surrounding countryside and what Countryside it is; the roads, views and routes being utilised are rated amongst some of the best for cycling in the UK.

With a choice of a 50 or 80 mile route, you will go over the impressive Black Mountain, through the Brecon Beacons National park, ride through the centre of the historic Welsh market towns such as Llandovery and Brecon as well as the numerous picturesque valley villages and hamlets and mountain passes along the way. All with a mixture of decent climbs, technical downhill’s and nice long flat stretches. The two courses are challenging but also achievable for all and with the timing of the event being mid October it’s ideal for one last ride of the season, or a social gathering after a hard season of competing or even a personal challenge to build up to throughout the year,  Something for everyone!!

The Pembrokeshire Sportive – 29th March 2020

2020 will see the Pembrokeshire Sportive leg of Tour de Shane being held on Traffic Managed roads. This is being done to give the event the standing the venue, route and riders deserve. It will allow us to safely increase the numbers and raise a significant amount of money for Velindre. It will start and finish once again from the Bishops Palace. A 13th Centaury grade one listed building that sits next to the impressive Cathedral, this really is an iconic site for an iconic event.

NEW ROUTE 2020

2019 saw us run the course in the opposite direction than the previous two years and this route was definitely more popular with the riders and works better for closed roads. The final route will be agreed ASAP. Slight changes may have to be made following full consultation with the authorities and local communities. But it will be based on.

The Route

What better way to start an event than riding out of the magnificent palace gates and along the cathedral Close before heading up Quickwell Hill and into St Davids. From here the route will change from previous years. It will be cycled in reverse (with a few new sections)

This means to join the A487 and heading East towards Haverfordwest. The first real challenge will see you dust off the morning cobwebs, with a short but tidy climb up Solva Hill, after a few more miles you will start your decent into Newgale and once at sea level will make a right turn and begin your tour of The Havens and Mid Pembrokeshire. This section is full of charming fishing ports, hamlets and rural lanes all with some great views. You will skim around the perimeter of the County town before heading back onto the A487 and attacking Newgale Hill again, but this time on the ascent! At the top of the hill you will turn right and head inland dissecting North Pembs till you reach Croesgoch. From here you will go across the cross roads and down onto the coast road and work your way back to St Davids.

The 70 miler follows the same route. Yes you will go up Newgale hill and at the top you will turn right and head inland dissecting North Pembs to you reach the coast at Goodwick. From here you go up Stop and Call Hill (Rather than down it) which is another decent climb! Once at the top you will meander your way along the North West Coast Line of Pembrokeshire till you find your way back to the City. A challenging but spectacular route!

Aid Stations

The aid stations will have water and sugary energy drinks and snacks, which will include your energy nibbles such as sweets, nuts, cakes and fruit. There will also be savouries and carbs such as sandwiches and pizza slices locations to be published near the time.

Extras

  • Timing chips to be used
  • There will be a quality event specific T-shirt
  • There will be a Finishers Medal (New for 2020)
  • Recognition for finishing positions in your own category

The Amman Adventure 80 mile route takes in some of the most spectacular countryside the South Wales Valleys have to offer. With great roads that have ideal surfaces for cycling and although the route does have 3 or 4! respectable peaks the overall elevation for the course is reasonable, meaning there are also some great flat or down hill sections that really allow you to stretch the legs and enjoy the ride. As a sportive we feel the ride has the lot, from challenging climbs to rolling roads and great views.

The biggest and most brutal climb of the day comes after only 3 miles and will see you make a 4 mile climb over the Black Mountains, the first half of this climb is steady with the last two miles being an out of the saddle type push! a couple of things will keep you going through this hard slog, 1) the view at the top 2) the knowledge that the next 15 miles will be either down hill or flat! From here the route will take you down a spectacular and technical decent and once in the valley you will make your way to Llandovery, this section has a good few miles of flat, straight open roads, which will allow you to stretch your legs, before you reach the A40 and head into Brecon via Sennybridge, where you will cycle through the centre of the iconic market town.

From here you will start to make your way back to the Amman, via a spectacular mountain pass and onto the Crai mountain road, both of which have been real hits with previous cyclists of the Amman Adventure. As you cut through the Brecon Beacon National Park not surprisingly you will face one final climb of the day before passing by the national show caves of Wales and then through the valley towns and villages of Ystradgynlais and Cwmllynfell on your way back at Glanaman for much deserved refreshments.

What you get

  • The Route will be fully marked and marshalled at appropriate points
  • Timed event and times published on website – Although it is  sportive not a race
  • 2 x Aid stations stocked with fluid and food (exact locations to be sent to riders)
  • Goody Bag
  • Event T-shirt

Entry fee £35

There will also be food and refreshments available at the start and finish line.

The Route

Amman Adventure – 50 Miler

The Amman Adventure 50 mile route takes in some of the most spectacular countryside the South Wales Valleys have to offer. With great roads that have ideal surfaces for cycling and although the route does have 3 respectable peaks the overall elevation for the course is reasonable, meaning there are also some great flat or down hill sections that really allow you to stretch the legs and enjoy the ride. The biggest and most brutal climb of the day comes after only 3 miles and will see you make a 4 mile climb over the Black Mountains, two things will keep you going through this hard slog, 1) the view at the top 2) the knowledge that the next 6 miles will be down hill! From here the 50 mile route has what we consider to be a treat a B road that takes you through the heart of the Brecon Beacons, past the Usk Reservoir, where you will join the A40 at Trecastle, this road really is a step back in time and although there are two cattle grid crossings, a steady climb to get to the ridge, once on the ridge it is spectacularly wild but with straight flat roads, which will allow you to enjoy the scenery. Once on the A40 you will make your way to Sennybridge, at the village renowned for its Military connections you will start to make your way back to the Amman through the Brecon Beacon National Park passing by the national show caves of Wales and through the valley towns and villages of Ystradgynlais and Cwmllynfell before arriving back at Glanaman for well earned refreshments.

This is a great route for those seeking a challenge but not quite sure about the 80 miler

Refunds / Deferrals / Transfers Policy

Organising events relies on pre bookings, to establish what our outlays will be and how much of everything there is to order. Therefore, so that we are not left at a loss by ordering unnecessary items the following policy is in place.

• You can obtain a refund of 80% up until a month before the event
• No refunds will be issued after 1 month before the start of the event
• You can transfer your place to another runner up until 48hrs before the start of the event.
• You can defer your place to the following years event up until 2 weeks before the start of the event.
• You can transfer your entry to another event of the same value, up until 2 weeks before the event (assuming there is space on the other event)

Our events are held in the outdoors in wonderful places and that is what makes them challenging and spectacular. Unfortunately, from time to time extreme weather conditions can cause serious disruption to the areas of the event or make the running of the event unsafe or irresponsible. On such occasions we may have to postpone the event.

If this is done, we will look for the nearest possible date to reschedule the event. If a rescheduled date proves to be unsuccessful or one cannot be found entries will be deferred to the following years event.

What this means is

If an event is cancelled due to adverse weather, or an unforeseen incident, emergency or such matter that is totally out of our control;

• No refunds will be given
• You will be deferred to the new date
• If the New date does not suit you, you will be transferred to the following years event.
• Throughout this process you will have the opportunity to transfer your place to another person or swap to another of our events of the same value.

We hope you appreciate the reasons behind such a policy and understand the work and financial commitment that goes into an event in the lead up, such as staff hours, merchandise buying and marketing. And having to cancel or having a large number of requests for refunds can make future events unsustainable.

We also very much appreciate the time and financial commitment you have put into training and preparing for an event and the frustration you have at it being postponed. That is why we try to be as fair as possible in dealing with these matters.

Our insurance does not cover cancelations; However, I know there are companies that cover individual competitors for entry fees on cancelled events. If you do many events and ones of high value this may be something to look into.

We would also like to thank our many customers of the years for their support 99.99% of which are very understanding and are true event athletes when nature strikes.

My second time doing this ride and so good I travel 130 miles to take part!
The atmosphere and camaraderie from both organisers and participants are second to none. Great challenging route with stunning views which is well signed, good feed stations and amazing encouragement through the route. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it – even with all the climbs!
