The National 3 Peaks Challenge: A Journey with Muuk Adventures
The National 3 Peaks Challenge is one of the most iconic and physically demanding endurance challenges in the UK. It involves hiking the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon.
All within a 24-hour timeframe. With a total hiking distance of about 23 miles (37 km) and a total ascent of nearly 10,000 feet (3,048 meters), this challenge is no walk in the park. The time pressure, combined with varying weather conditions and the need for efficient navigation, makes it an incredibly tough feat.
At Muuk Adventures, we understand that preparation, planning, and a bit of adventure spirit are key to completing the challenge. Here’s a glimpse into how we approach it, with some tips along the way to help you conquer the peaks!
Our Unique Approach: Pre-Challenge Preparation
At Muuk Adventures, we kick off our journey with an overnight stay near the scenic Loch Lomond on the Night before the challenge. This not only allows you to rest and mentally prepare but also offers a serene backdrop to relax before the big day.
The next morning, we set off for Ben Nevis, taking a route through the breath taking Glen Coe, where we make a quick stop for a photo opportunity. This pit stop allows everyone to soak in the dramatic landscape and get some fresh air before the physical exertion begins.
The Challenge: 3 Peaks, 24 Hours
Our challenge officially starts at the base of Ben Nevis, typically around 3 PM on Saturday. From this point, it’s a race against the clock to climb all three peaks within 24 hours. Here’s a breakdown of each leg of the journey, including the distances and travel times:
Ben Nevis (Scotland)
- Distance to Summit: 10.5 miles (round trip)
- Elevation: 4,413ft (1354m)
- Estimated Time: 5 to 6 Hours
- Travel to Scafell Pyke: Approximately 5-6 hours (265 miles)
We aim to complete Ben Nevis in 5 hours. After a quick descent, the team get comfy and refuel on the longest drive of the challenge. A 5 to 6 hour journey South to the Lake District for the next peak, Scafell Pike.
Scafell Pike (England)
- Distance to the Summit: 6 miles (round trip)
- Elevation: 3,209 feet (978)
- Estimated time 3.5 to 4 hours
- Travel time to Snowdon: Approximately 4.5 hours (210miles)
The climb up Scafell Pike is often the most challenging part, as it’s usually done in the dark early hours of the morning. We aim to summit and descend within 4 hours. Efficiency in personal admin and being on point when tired, is key here to ensure that we stay on schedule, as every minute counts when traveling between peaks
Snowdon (Wales)
- Distance to Summit: 8.3 miles (Round Trip)
- Elevation: 3,560ft (1085 Metres)
- Estimated Time: 4 to 5 hours
After a 4.5-hour drive from Scafell Pike, we arrive at the base of Snowdon. By this time, fatigue will likely have set in, but the finish line is within reach. To complete the challenge, we aim to finish Snowdon in under 5 hours.
Timing Breakdown: How to Complete the 3 Peaks in 24 Hours
To achieve the challenge in 24 hours, you need to balance your climbing speed with efficient driving. Here’s a rough breakdown of how the timings should align:
- Ben Nevis: Start at 3 PM, finish by 8 PM
- Drive to Scafell Pike: Arrive by 2 AM
- Scafell Pike: Start at 2:30 AM, finish by 6:30 AM
- Drive to Snowdon: Arrive by 1000 AM
- Snowdon: Start at 10:30 AM, finish by 3 PM
- Its tight!!
This leaves you with minimal wiggle room, so keeping pace is essential.
Key Tips for Success
- Fitness and Preparation: The challenge is physically demanding, so ensure you train adequately with plenty of uphill hikes and cardio. You do not have to run. But you need time on your feet.
- Nutrition and Hydration: Pack high-energy snacks and drink plenty of water throughout the journey to keep your energy levels steady. If you let your self get thirsty or hungry you have already left it too late. Prevention is better than the cure.
- Weather Awareness: The weather can be unpredictable, especially on the peaks. Be prepared with proper gear, including waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear. You will need spare hiking clothes and a system to make the process of changing easy. Especially when you are tired, its dark, there’s not much room and you are wet.
- Team Spirit: The mental aspect of the challenge is just as significant as the physical one. Keeping a positive attitude and encouraging your teammates can make all the difference.
