Tour de Shane 2018

Well after the winter and early spring that we have had we could not have asked for a better day for the Tour de Shane. Neither could we have asked for a better location than The Bishops Palace adjacent to the Cathedral and inside of the old City walls of St Davids provided a spectacular back drop.

It was great to have Shane, his friends and family down for the ride. Even though the ride is part of Shanes fundraising and awareness work for Velindre Cancer Centre I think they all will agree it’s not a bad ride to prepare them all for their IMW 2018 journey! I think I’m right in saying Dean Williams said on his return “That’s the toughest ride I’ve done”

And we can not over state the appreciation we have for Shane for working with us on this event the time he gives to support it and for raising funds for charity very commendable and a top effort – cheers.

It was also a great privilege to have Lukey Hardings parents attend the start of the event. Lukey a young and active sportsman spent a lot of time under the care of Velindre in his battle against cancer. He was due to meet up with Shane a few weeks before the ride and then attend on the day but unfortunately lost one of the most inspiring fights against the dreaded disease you’ll ever see.

Unfortunately another young lady we were hoping to see at the event, Tilly Morgan was too poorly to make it and we wish Chris, Amy and Tilly all the best and hope for a speedy recovery.

Now although the ride is a sportive and getting around he course in your own time whilst enjoying the great Pembrokeshire coast line and landscape is what its all about. It is only natural that some people tend to do this a bit quicker than others and in doing so show great cycling ability, power and fitness. Whilst personally we are equally impressed by those who dig deep and show great stamina and mental strength to keep going that bit longer.

We are also very mindful that a fair few riders didn’t have much miles in their legs (for obvious reasons) but still thought what the hell “Lets do this!” and it was good to see so many people there from clubs across South Wales and many of whom were raising money for their own causes or training for things like

The VCDC Double Carten for the VC Gallery. A group of mainly ex service men cycling to from Tenby to Cardiff to Cycle back again the next day with the Carten. All in aid of the VC Gallery in Haverfordwest. Good luck to you all.

Below is the finishing order. We would like to say that a fair few appeared to take up the offer of changing distances. Funny enough changing from the 70 to the 50. Accept for Sean Holley who changed up, then realised that he was on scrum 5 so made up his own 50 mile course (which did include Newgale Hill!) So if you find you are missing or on the wrong list message us and we will change it.

Great effort by local father and son duo of Paul and Isaac (15) Jones on a 3hrs 4mins finish closely followed by local lady Catherine Marks who has the pleasure of working next to the Bishops Palace.

3 Guys managed to finish under the 4hrs hours, not a bad effort! With Tom Ellis taking first spot and Westcoast Tri’s Rhys Harris coming in second. Rhys did not seem to be out of breath! Whilst the first lady in was Solva girl Helen Platel who has a big year ahead of her with our 3 day ultra the Marathon des Cote to tackle in June followed by a little race called “Kona” or something similar!!!
