Our Wilderness Adventure Training covers 3 main Aspects

This Training course is suitable for commercial providers working in remote areas in the UK or Overseas or individuals wanting to gain more experience and development in the outdoors.
The course is residential and runs over 3 and a half days, with evening learning on two of the nights. The course is designed to test your thought process and improve your knowledge, dynamic risk assessing and decision making in remote areas.
You will obtain two certifications for the first aid aspect of the course, 1) Our inhouse Wilderness First Aid Certificate (In line with the Wilderness Medical Society creteria) 2) The 16hr Outdoor First Aid Certificate (Which complies with the HSE First Aid at work requirements to work in the outdoors adventure arena and is recognised by NGB such as MLT, Paddle UK and British Cycling)
The learning on the course will be in a relaxed dicussion and demonstration classroom environment. Whilst the training aspect of the course will be at least 50% outdoors. Putting the learning into practice by problem solving our scenarios. This will be in remote areas to test your decision making, incident handling and practical skills whilst under pressure, with real life obstacles.
You will be trained, assessed and certificated under the National Navigation Award Scheme. The training provided will be above the schemes creteria with a strong introduction to Night Navigation in the mountains. This will also be ideal for those looking at becoming a Mountain Leader or even those who just want have the skill set to be safer in the mountains.
What is S.C.A.R.E.D Training? S.C.A.R.E.D is what we use to risk assess all our oversea and UK based expeditions and events. Any activity, which involves working in remote and hostile environments is thoroughly planned and put through the S.C.A.R.E.D checklist.
This is a 4 day course that is designed for an introduction level for people who have or are thinking of setting up and leading their own UK based or overseas expeditions. Such as Adventure holidays, extreme endurance events, Charity Hikes or media, reseach, educational trips.
Equally the course is suitable for individuals wanting to improve personal skills, CPD for any new first aiders looking to upskill from the 16hr first aid course.
4 Days is not enough to cover all the topics needed in this sector, but what we do offer is a thorough introduction to risk management and risk assessing when working in remote areas. Along with a fully certificated and HSE complaint remote first aid course and navigation qualifications. The training is predominately outdoors and interactive, with some classroom work to consolidate the learning. There are two sayings “You don’t know what you don’t know” and “You know what you don’t know” We will take you from the first to the second! And make you a better decision maker in the outdoors.
This course is priced at £300 pp to make it affordable for people setting out in the industry.
We will train you to use this simple formula to ensure you cover or have considered all major eventualities before deploying on an event or overseas.
Situational Awareness is exactly that. We will make sure you understand and know the importance of understanding where you are going. What is the political status, weather, wildlife, local cultures, transport infrastructure and terrain. Have you got the appropriate documentation, map, currency and anything else? Our training shows the best ways to get this information, how to understand it and having robust procedures to ensure nothing is missed and you are equipped to deal with emergencies.
Ensuring that you have a fit for purpose communication strategy. We will look at all options available and how best to source them, working within budgets and how to use them. It is important to Know the limitations of each item, what can go wrong and having a number of back up plans.
If things do go wrong, It is your capability and actions in this section that you are most likely to have to justify in a court of law, to an insurance company and where you can suffer most organisational damage.
To protect you and your organisation. The training covers a process of, looking at where you are going, what you are doing and who you are taking. We use this information to come up with most likely injuries and accidents that a party are most likely to come across and plan and prepare for these. If we are going into high altitude we need to prepare for altitude sickness. If we are going into areas of extreme heat or cold we need to prepare for these.
This is the section of the S.C.A.R.E.D Training that takes up the majority of the time. We will look at our kit, what we can carry, how to use the items and spend each day going through remote first aid skills and scenario based incident management. This is your remote first aid training, where it will be a mixture of being taught and learning through pressure.
Before you deploy to a remote area or start an event, you need to know what a response to an incident looks like. Will it be professional, will you have to pay for the service and most important. What timescales are we looking at? This information is Vital in the planning and will dictate what extra kit your medic will have to carry.
Carrying on from the response, What are your evacuation options and how will these work practically. It is important to be honest with your team about Response times and evacuation strategies.
This is the biggest skill an outdoor instructor, expedition lead or race director can have. You live and die by your decision making. In the planning stages, you identify the risks and decide on what measures are put in place. Some of these will be made for financial reasons and some will be practical. Then once you are on session and physically leading your group. Your ability to dynamic decision making be vital. We aim to improve your skills in decision making by working through S.C.A.R.E.D
The First aid aspect of the training will be relevant and full of practical tips to give you the confidence to think outside of the box. The subjects covered will be as below.
